SYNOPSIS
2055, Detroit.
L’Église catholique contrôle les États-Unis depuis une vingtaine d’années. Le gouvernement établi sous ce régime religieux asservit les humains à l’aide d’un module électronique implanté dans leur nuque. Ce « sycophante » surveille la bonne conduite des citoyens et les ramène dans le droit chemin en cas d’incartade. Sous cette dictature, l’homosexualité, les grossesses hors mariage et l’avortement, entre autres, sont punis par des châtiments allant de la prison à l’exécution.
Lorsqu’Alicia, dix-sept ans, réalise qu’elle est enceinte, elle doit s’enfuir. Aidée par sa mère, Lorraine, elle essaie de s’échapper vers le Canada, sans succès. De plus, sa mère décède pendant la tentative d’évasion. Alicia est forcée de s’en remettre à son père, Ian. Or celui-ci est officier dans les forces armées qui font respecter les lois de l’Église.
Ian se retrouve devant un dilemme : trahir son engagement envers ses principes et son employeur, ou livrer Alicia aux autorités. Soumis à son sycophante, il renie d’abord sa fille. Mais lorsque dans un instant de lucidité, il l’aide à s’évader, il devient à son tour un fugitif, un renégat, un transfuge. S’ensuit une course contre la montre pour rallier la base de la résistance, près de Montréal. Là-bas, ils seront en sûreté… si le sycophante de Ian les laisse tranquilles.
Amour ou loyauté : le choix est douloureux
The Story:
2055, Detroit.
The Catholic Church has controlled the United States for twenty years. The government established under this religious regime enslaves human beings with an electronic module implanted in the back of their necks. This ‘sycophant’ monitors the good behaviour of citizens and brings them back into line if they stray. Under this dictatorship, homosexuality, pregnancy outside marriage and abortion, among other things, are punishable by penalties ranging from imprisonment to execution.
When seventeen-year-old Alicia realises she is pregnant, she has to flee. With the help of her mother, Lorraine, she tries to escape to Canada, but without success. What’s more, her mother dies during the escape attempt. Alicia is forced to rely on her father, Ian. Ian is an officer in the armed forces who enforces the laws of the Church.
Ian is faced with a dilemma: betray his commitment to his principles and his employer, or hand Alicia over to the authorities. Submissive to his sycophant, he first disowns his daughter. But when, in a moment of lucidity, he helps her escape, he in turn becomes a fugitive, a renegade, a defector. What follows is a race against time to reach the resistance base near Montreal. There, they will be safe… if Ian’s sycophant leaves them alone.
